What’s Covered?
In addition to liability coverage, here are some additional coverages you should become familiar with before purchasing your next auto policy:
Liability Coverage
Liability coverage pays for bodily injury and property damage caused to others when you are deemed responsible for an accident. Despite Florida being a “No-Fault State” accident responsibility is assessed by the responding officer and the at-fault driver can be sued for thousands of dollars, therefore Bodily Injury Liability (BIL) is important to have to save you money in the long run.
"No Fault" State
Florida is considered a “No-Fault” state, meaning in the event of an accident each person pays for their own expenses, regardless of who is at fault. However, if damages are excessive and more than what the policy covers, you can be sued for damages.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
The purpose of PIP insurance is to cover medical expenses and other costs such as lost wages. This coverage is often referred to as “no-fault” coverage, as it covers and pays out claims on accidents regardless of who is at fault. Additionally, PIP is for the purpose of defending yourself against minor lawsuits requiring additional funds to pay for damages should you be responsible.
Bodily Injury Liability (BIL)
Bodily Injury Liability covers injuries someone may receive as a result of a car accident. Once again, Florida is a no-fault state however, you could still be sued for injuries if your PIP insurance doesn’t cover it.
Collision
Collision insurance covers damage sustained due to an auto accident to your covered vehicle.
Comprehensive
Auto theft, “acts of nature,” or other accidents outside of vehicle damages/collisions are covered by Comprehensive coverage.
Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist
Uninsured Motorist coverage covers you in an accident with a motorist who has no insurance or is underinsured.
Loss of Use
This coverage provides a rental car when a loss occurs; this coverage is usually limited to a daily dollar amount
All-Terrain Vehicles: Tough and Rough
For those who prefer wide open spaces and land bound activities, our State lends itself to exploring and traversing rugged terrain, which is prefect for All-Terrain vehicles. All-Terrain Vehicles or (ATVs) can be dangerous and expensive to replace when damaged. Owners of such vehicles should consider purchasing ATV insurance in the event of loss and to ride in State parks as required by Florida law.
